Overview[]

The UNCITRAL Electronic Commerce Working Group (ECWG) was given the mission to:

Prepare an international instrument dealing with selected issues on electronic contracting and a comprehensive survey of possible legal barriers to the development of electronic commerce in international instruments.

This recommendation was made at UNCITRAL’s meeting of its thirty-fourth session from June 25-July 13, 2001, in Vienna. The first draft of the convention was presented for review at ECWG’s meeting at its 39th session in 2002 in New York City, and was discussed in detail at the 44th session of the ECWG on October 11-22, 2004, in Vienna.

The final version of the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Commerce was promulgated in 1996.
