Overview
The Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology Directorate (S&T) was established by the Homeland Security Act of 2002. The mission of S&T is to strengthen America's security and resiliency by providing knowledge products and innovative technology solutions for the Homeland Security Enterprise (HSE).
S&T advises the DHS Secretary on research and development issues; implements a national plan to identify and develop countermeasures to chemical, biological, and other emerging terrorist threats; and conducts basic and applied research, development, demonstration, testing, and evaluation activities that are relevant to any or all elements of DHS, through both intramural and extramural programs.
S&T is the core source of scientific and engineering talent within the Department. The breadth and importance of S&T's contributions to the HSE include:
- S&T provides the HSE with new capabilities through new technology and operational process enhancements.
- S&T provides innovative, systems-based solutions to complex HSE problems.
- S&T has the technical depth and reach to discover, adapt, and leverage scientific and engineering solutions developed by federal agencies and laboratories; state, local, and tribal governments; universities; and the private sector — across the United States and internationally.
