A topographic map is

[a] map that presents the vertical position of features in measurable form as well as their horizontal positions.[1]
a type of map usually showing a suite of features including terrain, streams, boundaries, roads, and towns, which are commonly used as reference maps and as reference information behind GIS map layers.[2]
