Overview[]
This study sought to obtain and analyze empirical data from patent records, litigation records, industry reports, corporate public records and a survey concerning the acquisition and use of patents in the smartphone industry. The study looked to identify similarities and distinctions in practices across organizations and across subsets of the marketplace. Through this analysis, the study also sought to make an assessment of the openness of the smartphone market and the impact that the ownership and enforcement of large patent portfolios has on the market.
