System testing is

[t]he process of testing an integrated hardware and software system to verify that the system meets its specified requirements. Such testing may be conducted in both the development environment and the target environment.[1]

"Testing of both hardware and software is essential to any engineering project. Components are tested and modified to overcome deficiencies. Sub-systems are tested and modified. Finally, prototypes of the complete system are built and tested under full operating conditions whenever possible. These system tests invariably reveal faults in the original design, faults which must be corrected before production begins."[2]
