Definition[]

A sensor network is a network (either wireless, wired or a combination of wireless and wired) of spatially distributed sensors used to monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants, at different locations. The data collected by the sensors is transmitted to one or more central points where it is analyzed.

A sensor network is

[a] system using sensors to gather overall information about the current state of the network. A sensor is usually a computer system or a packet routing device connected to a network that collects information about data traffic in the segment to which it is connected.[1]
