A root directory is the top directory in a tree-structured file system. The root directory is provided by the operating system and has a special name; for example, in UNIX systems the root directory is called “/.” A user with access to the root directory typically has complete control over the resources of that system, e.g., to delete or modify files, or to add or remove users.
