Telecommunications

A remote terminal is

[t]elephone communications equipment that is installed within the service area or "neighborhood" that traditionally aggregates and multiplexes telephone local loops and transmits the aggregated signals from the service area back to the telephone central office switch. This has evolved to become the "node" within a service area in a fiber-to-the-node architecture.[1]
