The Internet protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS) is

[]n open, standardized, "operator friendly," Next Generation Networking multi-media architecture for mobile and fixed IP services. IMS is a VoIP implementation based on a 3GPP variant of SIP, and runs over standard IP. It is used by telecom operators in integrated networks to offer network controlled multimedia services.[1]
