Overview[]
The Act introduced three main reforms:
- A legislative basis for the Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) and the Defence Signals Directorate (DSD), both of which had been previously established by executive order.
- Increased powers for the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), ASIS and DSD.
- Establishment of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS) to oversee ASIO, ASIS, DSD, DIGO, DIO and ONA.
Under the Act, the Australian Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) provides foreign signals intelligence as well as advice and assistance on matters relating to the security and integrity of electronic information. These twin missions complement each other, with the skillsets and capabilities required to be an expert at one being precisely those required to master the other.
