Citation[]

In the Matter of Equifax Credit Information Services, Inc., 120 F.T.C. 577 (1995).

Factual Background[]

The Federal Trade Commission alleged that Equifax Credit Information Services, the credit bureau subsidiary of Equifax Inc., had violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act of 1970 by furnishing consumer reports to individuals without a permissible purpose, included derogatory information in consumer reports that should have been excluded after it was disputed by the consumer, and failing to take steps to reduce inaccuracies in reports and reinvestigate disputed information.

Consent Decree[]

The FTC settled charges with a consent agreement, which required Equifax to take steps to improve the accuracy of its consumer reports and limit the furnishing of such reports to those with a permissible purpose under FCRA.
