Definitions[]

Image enhancement is:

  1. the process of improving the quality of a digitally stored image by manipulating the image with software.
  2. "[t]he processing of externally derived information-bearing images by algorithms such as time compression, filtering, extraction, selection, correlation, convolution or transformations between domains (e.g., fast Fourier transform or Walsh transform). This does not include algorithms using only linear or rotational transformation of a single image, such as translation, feature extraction, registration or false coloration."[1]
