IRENE 3D is

[a] specialized scanner, developed by Carl Haber, Earl Cornell, and others at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, that uses optical scanning technology to preserve and restore sound recordings. IRENE produces a three-dimensional optical scan of the grooves in fragile or decayed recordings. Its software creates a virtual representation of a groove that may be manipulated and converted to a digital sound file.[1]
