Data[]

A hit is "the identification, through a matching program, of a specific individual."[1]

Internet[]

A hit is a log entry on the web server which shows that an item was retrieved from a particular web page on that server. Depending on how a website is created, a single access to a web page may generate multiple hits. The number of hits recorded for a website provides a very rough estimate of the number of users who have accessed the website.
