Overview[]

The Health Alert Network (HAN) is a nationwide system serving as a platform for the distribution of health alerts, dissemination of prevention guidelines and other information, distance learning, national disease surveillance, and electronic laboratory reporting, as well as for CDC’s bioterrorism and related initiatives to strengthen preparedness at the local and state levels.

It functions as a Health Alert component to the Public Health Information Network (PHIN) to ensure that each community has prompt access to emergent health information; a cadre of highly-trained professional personnel; and evidence-based practices and procedures for effective public health preparedness, response, and service on a 24-7-365 basis. The HAN messaging systems transmit health alerts, advisories, and updates to more than one million recipients.
