Definition[]

Gnutella emerged as the first, fully decentralized, peer-to-peer protocol in 2000, and was used on the Internet to share and swap music files in the MP3 compression format.

Overview[]

The music industry was often frustrated in their efforts to counter this peer-to-peer technology because it could not identify a main controlling source.

Gnutella also allowed Internet users to search for software and documents on the GnutellaNet, a loose federation of users and organizations that make a wide variety of information available to the world at large.
