Georeferencing is

the use of data from the Global Positioning System to reference remotely sensed aerial images or ground-based human observations to specific geographic coordinates.[1]
[t]he process of referencing elements in an image to a known coordinate system, such as latitude/longitude or Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM).[2]
establishing a relationship between information (e.g., documents, datasets, maps, images, biographical information) and geographic locations through placenames (i.e., toponyms) or place codes (e.g., postal codes) or through geospatial referencing (e.g., longitude and latitude coordinates).[3]
