An evidentiary privilege confers on an individual the right to refuse to testify or reveal facts about certain matters and the right to prevent another from doing so as well. Evidentiary privileges are applicable in virtually all governmental proceedings, including trials.
There are a number of recognized privileges, including the:
- attorney-client privilege
- physician-patient privilege
- spousal privilege
- priest-penitent privilege
- accountant-client privilege
- voter privilege
- Executive privilege
