An Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) is a state driver's license that utilize facilitative technology such as RFID and contain a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. They can be used as proof of identity and U.S. citizenship in place of a passport for entry into the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. Enhanced drivers’ licenses also are acceptable for official federal purposes.
