Definition[]

An energy management device is

[a] device in the customer's premise, including hardware and software, designed to control the operation of other energy devices according to customer preferences and objectives such as reducing energy costs, or maintaining comfort or convenience. Controlled devices could include, but are not limited to, thermostats, lighting, and smart appliances. Among other control inputs, an energy management device can accept energy pricing signals from a utility or third party energy services provider.[1]
