An emerging technology is a technological advance or innovation in a field of technology that is currently developing or will be developed over the next five to ten years, and that will substantially alter the business, economic, and social environment.

Currently nanotechnologies, synthetic biology, genomics, converging ICT technologies, robotics, geoengineering and others are considered emerging technologies.
