Overview[]

The Earth Resources Observation System (EROS) Data Center (EDC) is a national archive, production, distribution and research facility for remotely-sensed data and other geographic information.

It is a data management, systems development, and research field center for the U.S. Geological Survey's National Mapping Division. The Data Center stores, processes, and distributes a variety of data, including cartographic, satellite, and aircraft data. The Data Center's archives also hold the world's largest collection of civilian remotely sensed data covering the Earth's land masses.

In partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the EROS Center has been the steward and distributor of Landsat satellite data for over 40 years. The Landsat series of satellite missions has collected imagery of the Earth's surface since 1972, providing the most comprehensive record of the global landmass ever assembled. Landsat data are extremely valuable for a range of applications that contribute to science, environmental monitoring, and homeland security.
