It covers a range of different types of businesses, from [[consumer]]-based [[retail]] [[site]]s, through [[auction site|auction]] or [[music]] [[site]]s, to business exchanges trading [[good]]s and [[service]]s between corporations. It is currently one of the most important aspects of the [[Internet]]. 

The majority of e-commerce sites are [[retail]] stores selling [[product]]s directly to the public. However there are also numerous [[online store]]s dedicated to [[business-to-business]] ([[B2B]]) [[sale]]s and wholesale activities. [[E-commerce]] is not limited to the selling of physical [[product]]s, but also refers to the selling of [[service]]s where payments for those [[service]]s are made [[online]].
