Definition[]

To decompile a computer program means to translate a machine language program back into a more understandable form, such as assembly language or high-level language.

Overview[]

Decompilation may be a copyright infringement because the translation process involves the making of an unauthorized copy or derivative work. Opinions are divided on the question of whether decompilation is permitted by Section 107 (fair use) or Section 117 of the copyright law.
