Definition[]

The Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) is a cable modem standard from CableLabs, which provides equipment certification for interoperability.

Overview[]

DOCSIS supports IP traffic (Internet traffic) over digital cable TV channels, and most cable modem are DOCSIS compliant. Some cable companies are currently deploying third-generation (DOCSIS 3.0) equipment. Originally formed by four major cable operators and managed by Multimedia Cable Network System, the project was later turned over to CableLabs.
