Government Accountability Office, Data Mining: Early Attention to Privacy in Developing a Key DHS Program Could Reduce Risks (GAO-07-293) (Feb. 28, 2007) (full-text).
Overview[]
The GAO reported that DHS’s ADVISE (Analysis, Dissemination, Visualization, Insight, and Semantic Enhancement) data-mining tool raised a number of privacy concerns, such as the potential for erroneously associating individuals with crime or terrorism and the misidentification of individuals with similar names. The system was subsequently canceled.
