Overview[]
The Act authorizes the Department of Commerce, through the National Institute of Standards and Technology, to facilitate and support the development of voluntary standards to reduce cyber risks to critical infrastructure.
The law also orders the Office of Science and Technology Policy to develop a federal cybersecurity research and development plan.
Section 502 of the Act requires the Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to work with relevant Federal agencies to ensure interagency coordination "in the development of international technical standards related to information system security," and develop and transmit to Congress a plan for ensuring such coordination within one year of enactment.
