Definition

Custom software (also called bespoke software) is software specifically designed for a customer's individual needs.

Overview

"While it may later be cleared or released for broader use, in general an individual customer procures custom software for a specific purpose, intends to be the sole user of this software, and takes concrete steps to protect the proprietary nature of the software and its derivatives. Examples might include quantitative algorithms for evaluating hedge funds for a financial institution or avionics software for an advanced aircraft manufacturer."[1]
