COMSAT (an acronym for COMmunications SATellite Corporation) was formed by an act of Congress in 1962 and represented U.S. commercial interests in satellite technology development at INTELSAT.
Of its 16 orbiting satellites, 10 handle international communications, 3 link ships at sea, and 3 are leased for domestic telephone calls.
