Overview[]

CALEA implementation is directed by the CALEA Implementation Unit (CIU) of the Electronic Surveillance Technology Section, a section of the Operational Technology Division, Federal Bureau of Investigation. The CIU supports the FBI priorities of combating terrorism, espionage, and crimes of all types by ensuring the future viability of lawfully-authorized electronic surveillance.

The unit is responsible for the development of overarching CALEA implementation strategies; coordination of liaison with all governmental, law enforcement, and industry entities; consultation with law enforcement and industry regarding technical standards; deployment of technical electronic surveillance solutions; oversight of the telecommunications industry's development of capability enhancements; and the fulfillment of all legislative and regulatory CALEA requirements.

CALEA implementation responsibilities are delegated to the Federal Bureau of Investigation by the U.S. Attorney General.[1]
