Overview[]

Brain is considered to be the first malware developed specifically for the personal computer. It was a PC virus that appeared and propagated when the user "booted up" his computer from a floppy disc. It was coded in 1986 by two brothers in Pakistan. They named the virus Brain after their computer shop in Lahore and included their names, addresses, and phone numbers in the code.

Calling Brain malware is slightly misleading because the brothers had no ill intentions. They were simply curious to find out how far their creation could travel. Within a year it had traveled around the globe.
