An author is

• a person or entity responsible for the content of a book or other publication.

• "[t]he user responsible for creating or modifying a document or requirement."

U.S. copyright law

While the term author is used repeated in U.S. copyright law, the term is never defined. The U.S. Supreme Court has defined an "author" as “[h]e to whom anything owes its origin; originator, maker.”
