Overview[]
The Article 29 Data Protection Working Party (also Article 29 Working Party and WP29) was the advisory body that brought together the national data protection authorities of the Member States as well as the European Data Protection Supervisor.
It was the "Working Party on the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data." It was established by the Article 29 of the EU Directive on the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data and on the Free Movement of such Data.
It was one of the bodies competent for interpreting the provisions of the EU Directive on the Protection of Personal Data. It carried out this task by issuing recommendations, opinions and working documents on different aspects of the EU Directive on the Protection of Personal Data. The Article 29 Working Party was composed of representatives of the national data protection authorities of the EU Member States, representatives of the European Data Protection Supervisor and representatives of the European Commission.
It was an independent European advisory body on data protection and privacy. Its tasks are described in Article 30 of Directive 95/46/EC and Article 15 of Directive 2002/58/EC.
The Article 29 Working Party ceased to exist as of 25 May 2018. It was replaced by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB).
