Archiving is

the process of creating a backup copy of computer files, especially for long-term storage.[1]

[m]oving electronic files no longer being used to less accessible and usually less expensive storage media for safe keeping.

a type of backup consisting of policies in which the target destination retains data that are deleted or altered on the original storage device.[2]
