An appliance is

a generic term that encapsulates many aspects of integrated systems and related solutions cutting across data center, PC and software delivery.[1]
[a] hardware platform with its supporting software that performs a single function or multiple functions.[2]
[s]erver hardware configured with server software and optimized for simple functions such as Web page serving.[3]
pre-configured and ready to run when data is added. Appliances generally offer specialised hardware, a management system and storage.[4]
