Adware (an acronym for advertising-supported software) is

[a] type of advertising display software that delivers advertising content potentially in a manner or context that may be unexpected and unwanted by users.[1]
[a] software package which automatically plays, displays or downloads advertising material to a computer after the software is installed on it or while an associated application is being used.[2]

Overview[]

Some adware displays advertisements in pop-up windows or a bar in the frame of the application window, while others monitor a user's computer usage (including websites visited) and displays targeted advertisements based on that use.
