Definition[]

Advanced meter reading (AMR) (also called automated meter reading) is a

system where aggregated kWh usage, and in some cases demand, is retrieved via an automatic means such as a drive-by vehicle or walk-by handheld systems.[1]

Overview[]

It typically uses one-way communications technology to collect data from an electric meter via power line communications, radio or other networking technology. AMR is evolving into the automated metering infrastructure (AMI).
