An ad hoc network (also spelled ad-hoc network) is

[a] local area network in which computers and network devices are in close proximity to others on the network. These devices are connected temporarily or for specific purposes.[1]
[a] wireless network that dynamically connects wireless client devices to each other without the use of an infrastructure device, such as an access point or a base station.[2]
