Definitions[]

An active record is

a record needed to perform current operations or ongoing business matters. It is consulted frequently, and it must be conveniently available for immediate reference, either manually or via a computer system.[1]
[r]ecords that continue to be used with sufficient frequency to justify keeping them in the office of creation; current records.[2]
[i]nformation stored on computer systems that can be readily accessed by the operating system or software without a need to reload media, undelete the information, or reconstruct it from other sources.[3]
